Music and Smiles

Music moves me. Literally. If I hear music I just can't help but dance. That's one of the reasons I love Zumba so much. Dancing! For me, the fitness is secondary. I use Zumba to feel the music, let loose and have fun.

As Zumba instructors, we individually get to choose what music to use in our classes. The Zumba rule is 70% Latin/world rythyms and 30% instructor choice. Me, I love reggaeton. Music with a good strong beat that I can feel. I also really enjoy adding in Merengue, Cumbia, Salsa, Samba and Bhangra. I never add in a song I don't love.

I LOVE all my music which is why I can never stop smiling when I'm teaching.

Here's picture of me feeling the music at my niece's wedding. (My hair likes to dance too.) Here my flying hair is catching the lights from the dj's light stand, giving me a red and green mohawk! What a fun time :)

Wunderwoman Triathlon 2011

As some you you may know, I also like to do Sprint Triathlons. My 5 sisters, 1 niece and I all competed in the Spokane Wunderwoman Triathlon.
This year I rented a roadbike, a step up from my own hybrid bike. I was a bit nervous about crashing, and I only wobbled a little bit :) But in the end I took almost 5 minutes off my bike time!

Overall, I beat last years time by 8 minutes! "ROCK ON"

I'm learning to embrace the before race nerves, my pounding heart and my swirling stomach. I also cut about 1 1/2 minutes off my swim time!

Here I am (on the right) with one of my sisters, loving that feeling of accomplishment you get after the race is over.

MY SHOES

Figuring out the right shoes for Zumba and You can be a process. I've found these Nike Zoom shoes and I love them. They are comfortable and have enough support for me. Sometimes they still stick to the floors, making it hard for me to get into my Beto Shuffle ;) So I put a little bit of Athletic tape on the ball of my shoe. And I only put it on my right shoe.

Too much tape, or tape on each shoe, made my knees hurt from trying to keep myself from slipping.

Plenty of people can still move how they want to move in their regular workout shoes. So there is not necessarily a need to go buy new shoes for Zumba unless you decide you want to. Some options are to cut the foot off of an athletic sock and put the tube it creates over your shoes, or do the same thing with a nylon.

Some people like Capezio dance shoes, although they don't have any arch support, so if support is an issue for you, those shoes may not work.

The first shoe change I made was to buy a pair of inexpensive shoes from Payless and I looked for something with a big circle (turn spot) on the ball of the shoe. Those freed up my movement tremendously and I'd probably still be wearing those but I didn't get enough cusion/support in the shoe.

So do some experimenting....try some tape....and let's dance :)

Classes have started!

Classes at the Lake Wilderness Lodge have started and they are a lot of fun!
Great sound, fun lights, and fun people.

7:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday nights.
Lake Wilderness Lodge
22500 SE 248th St
Maple Valley, WA

The Lodge is on Lake Wilderness. To get there from Witte Road, turn West onto 248th street. 248th st is the road the community center is on. Drive on 248th st with the community center on your left and the golf course on your right. As the road curves around there are some left turns. The first takes you to the arboretum. Take the middle road as it will take you to the lodge. If you were to stay on 248th as it turns to the right you'll be going towards the park entrance.

Clear as mud? I've lived in Maple Valley for 9 years and last fall was the first time I've been to the Lodge...it's a tucked away, hidden gem here in MV :)

We had our first class on Tuesday and over half of the students were new to Zumba fitness and they really enjoyed it. Whether you're new or have done Zumba before, you can get a great workout while feeling like you're at a party!
Bring your $6 drop-in fee, pay at the office on the main floor, (or pay ahead by calling- 425-432-9953). Then come on downstairs and join the party.
You may also want to bring a water bottle. Be prepared to sweat and have fun.
